十六国
“五胡十六国”，指“十六国”(304年-439年)，是中国历史上的一段时期，在“东晋”与“南北朝”时期之间，是大量外族入侵和割据的时代，也称“五胡乱华”。在入侵的众多游牧民族中，以匈奴、羯、鲜卑、羌及氐为主，统称“五胡”。他们相继建立过许多国家，而北魏史学家崔鸿以其中十六个国家撰写了《十六国春秋》(五凉、四燕、三秦、二赵、一成、一夏)，故史学家称这时期为“五胡十六国”。“五胡十六国”所在的范围涵盖华北、蜀地、辽东(最远可达漠北)、江淮及西域等地。

Five Nomadic Tribes and Sixteen States
"Five nomadic tribes and sixteen states", namely the "sixteen states" (304 A.D. – 439 A.D.), is a period in Chinese history between the Eastern Jin dynasty and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, when a large number of foreign invasions and separatism swarmed into. Thus this period also was called "invasion of China by five nomadic tribes". They had established many states, and based on sixteen states from them, Cui Hong, a historian of the Northern Wei dynasty, wrote the Spring and Autumn of Sixteen States (the five period of Liang, four of Yan, Three of Qin, two of Zhao and the Cheng and Xia dynasty), thus historians called this period as "five nomadic tribes and sixteen states". The territory of the "sixteen states" covers the northern part of China, Sichuan province, the eastern part of Liaoning province (as far as the northern part of desert), Yangtze and Huai rivers, the western areas and so on.
