I don't think middle school students can have a girlfriend or a boyfriend.
Firstly, they should focus on their study. There are so much knowledge for them to learn at the best time of their life. If they don't do well in this, they won't have a better and bright future.
Secondly, they are still too young to have a girlfriend or a boyfriend. They themselves are still kids and do not have the ability to tell right or wrong. Besides, their love may last for a very short time because they don't know how to love each other correctly.
Thirdly, having a girlfriend or a boyfriend makes their parents worry about them. Parents usually prevent their children from doing so.
I beleive a good student shall put study at first place.
