Monday
I have decided to keep a diary about what I eat and how much I exercise, because I think it will
help me to get fit and lose weight. Today has been a good day for me. For breakfast I had toast
and jam. I usually take the bus to school, but I walked there instead so that I felt really
awake when I arrived at school. We had a gymnastics lesson at school and I did really well—I
love gymnastics!
For lunch I had two sandwiches, an apple and some sweets. For tea I had some biscuits and a
banana. For supper my mother cooked a big meal with soup, chicken and vegetables, and after that I had a lot of ice cream!
Tuesday
I had the same breakfast as yesterday and walked to school again. While I was walking, I met my friend Sarah. Her parents own a fitness club. When I told her that I was keeping this diary, she wanted to know why I was keeping it. I explained that I wanted to lose a bit of weight. She said I could exercise at her parents' club if I wanted—we could do it together. I said that was a
great idea.
For lunch I had rice and vegetables, biscuits for tea, and some sweets, and fish and rice for
supper. Oh yes, before I went to bed, I had a drink of hot chocolate.
Wednesday
I didn't have any breakfast today because I woke up late and only had time for a cup of tea. I
took the bus to school. I felt very hungry at 11 o'clock and had two bags of sweets. Oh dear,
I'm feeling very tired. I went to Sarah's parents fitness club after school and exercised for an
hour. I'll finish writing my diary tomorrow instead!
New Food and the New World
In the last 500 years, nothing about people—not their clothes, ideas, or languages—has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s.
And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where
chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.
The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe where soon it was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the "Potato Famine" of 1845–1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America.
There are many other foods that have travelled from South America to the Old World. But some
others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world's largest grower of coffee, and
coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to
Ethiopia, a country in Africa. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400s.
According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person named Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the
"wide-awake" feeling that one-third of the world's population now starts the day with.
