杨柳青石家大院，始建于1875年，至今已有120多年的历史，其建筑结构独特，砖木石雕精美。石家是当年天津八大家之一，一度财势显赫，声名遐迩。

清雍正年间(1723—1735)，石氏先人即从山东来到天津一带操船营运。乾隆五十年(1785)，从石衷一开始落户杨柳青，其子石万程颇善经营，家资日丰。到石万程之子石献廷时期，石家已一改累代单传而人丁兴旺，家大业大。道光三年(1827)，石献廷的儿子们遵照父亲遗嘱，分家另过，各立堂名。因老大石宝福早天，老二石宝善立长门福善堂；老三石宝庆立二门正廉堂；老四石宝苓立三门天锡堂；老五石宝珩立四门尊美堂。福善堂、正廉堂以及天锡堂的后世子弟中，虽也有勤勉上进、刻意经营者，但大多是纨绔子弟，吃喝玩乐，寄生度日。到清末民初，三门的家道先后中落。而尊美堂一支，石宝珩长子石元俊在咸丰十一年(1861)科考中举，官拜工部郎中，但以父老弟幼为名末曾到任，反而致力于家业经营，使得买卖兴隆，资产巨增。光绪十年(1884)，石元仕继石元俊之后主持尊美堂。他不仅注重家产积累，更善于扩大政治势力。石元仕努力结交权贵，子女多与天津官绅、豪门结姻，他自己的夫人，即是两广总督张之洞的族侄女。光绪二十六年(1900)，八国联军入侵，石元仕带头出资在家乡办“支应局”，使地方免除许多祸乱，因而得到清政府赏识，先后被李鸿章和慈禧接见，并赏给他一个四品卿衔，一时名重津门，当选为天津议会、董事会委员，从而确立了他集地主、官僚、资本家与一身的社会地位。
民国七年(1918)，石元仕七十岁生日，石府接朋引客，大摆寿筵，极尽奢华。不料次年，石元仕即背生溃疽，体弱已极，很快故去。其出丧规模，在杨柳青地区可谓空前绝后，所耗财资，难以计数。加之连年战乱，民不聊生，石家生意凋敝，地租难收，衰落之势初现。石元仕去世后，其家人即离开尊美堂老宅，全部迁往天津定居。民国二十九年(1940)，石元仕夫人去世。因其娘家势力不凡，丧事必得大办，致使家业更加一蹶不振，只好负债度日。至1948年，天津解放前夕，尊美堂的大部分住宅已变卖他人。
1987年6月，西青区人民政府将“尊美堂”宅第列为区级文物(俗称石家大院)，加以保护，并拔资修复。在天津市有关单位的支持和工程技术人员的共同努力下，历时六年，投资560万元人民币，终于完成修复工作。1992年，石家大院作为“杨柳青博物馆”对外开放，属天津市级文物保护单位。
2006年05月25日，石家大院作为清代古建筑，被国务院批准列入第六批全国重点文物保护单位名单.
