《hurt》由2003年Johnny Cash风烛残年之际翻录此曲。Nine Inch Nails主唱Trent Reznor看了Cash版本的MV后流着泪说Hurt以后不再属于他。
该歌曲由音乐制作人Rick Rubin录制，并于2003年以单曲形式发布。在歌曲翻唱的筹备阶段，原唱Nine Inch Nails表示荣幸至极，他同时表示，这个主意听起来有点像是在制造卖点（他的观点在翻唱完成后发生了极大的转变）。在歌曲发布后，电影《不速之客》的导演Mark Romanek深深的被这一歌曲所震撼。他随后便请求Rubin，能否让自己为这首单曲录制一些画面，甚至表示愿意免费为歌曲制作一个短视频。Rubin最终在Romanek的一再坚持下同意他录制MV。
然而Jonhnny Cash 的身体情况在当时已日渐衰退，Romanek 面临着非常有限的时间去制作这个视频。与此同时，71岁的Jonhnny Cash也不愿意再次衣着光鲜的把自己暴露在田纳西州寒冷的空气中。这无疑给Romanek 的制作带来了许多困难。
在拍摄MV的事情确定下来之后Romanek 立即乘坐当天的夜间航班，前往田纳西州寻找适合拍摄的地点。当他来到Jonhnny Cash的个人博物馆时，他发现这个博物馆已经长期废弃。就在这里他想到或许他可以在MV中向观众坦白Jonhnny Cash糟糕的身体情况，就如同Cash一直在歌曲中坦白自己的内心想法一样。
这个想法最终在MV中得到了实现。 MV中，陈旧的艺术品，低沉的神态，关闭的博物馆，破碎的唱片盒，空荡的晚宴，过往的回忆，合上的钢琴，以及妻子担忧的眼神，不断的向观众倾述人生的短暂，死亡的无情。每个观众对于这个短片都会有不同的泪点。对于Romanek来说，他最感动的就是当Jonhnny Cash用自己颤抖的双手将葡萄酒洒在桌上。
在影片录制完3个月之后， Jonhnny Cash 的妻子 June Carter便与世长辞。而Jonhnny Cash本人也在录制7个月后，随自己的妻子而去。
