Karamay is located in the Dzungarian basin. The city is 110 km wide (from east to west) at its widest point, and at most 240 km long from north to south.Karamay has a cold desert climate (Koppen BWk), with long, very cold, but dry winters, short and rapid spring and autumn, and very hot yet dry summers. The high only reaches �6�111.2 °C (11.8 °F) in January, but soars to 33.9 °C (93.0 °F) in July. The annual mean averages to 8.94 °C (48.09 °F), warmer than most places at corresponding latitude, due to the long summers. Annual precipitation is 106 millimetres (4.17 in), and usually light throughout the year, though it tends to be greatest in summer.
