这首诗关系到两个历史人物，乐羊和秦西巴。乐羊是魏国的将军。魏文侯命他率兵攻中山，中山君逮捕了乐羊的儿子，把他杀死后，煮成肉羹，派人送给乐羊。乐羊为了表示忠于魏文侯，就吃下了这碗肉羹。魏文侯虽然重赏他的军功，但是怀疑他心地残忍，毫无父子骨肉之情。秦西巴是中山君的侍从，中山君孟孙出郊狩猎，得到一只小鹿(麂)，分付秦西巴牵回去。小鹿的母亲一路跟着悲鸣不已，秦西巴心中不忍，就把小鹿放走。孟孙以为秦西巴是个忠厚慈善的人，任命他为太子太傅，教导太子。
