in which更加精确，是介词加关系代词。in which有两种用法：一是替换关系副词where，一是替换指代the way的关系副词that。如：

作为其他状语，where 不等于 in which
但是，唯一的例外就是在介词in 是从句动词词组的情况下，就不能用where 来替换in which。
想判断in which＝where 还是介词in提前，你只需要把in 放到句子末尾看一下是否符合结构就可以了。例如：This is something in which he excels. 把从句还原：He excels in something. 这里，excel in 是固定搭配，此时就不能用where 代替in which.

是我一开始把你的问题理解错了额-------地点状语从句的引导词是where，我当时没想到会有人会提出这个问题。因为学生一般纠结的都是定语从句中where=in which的问题，而对状语从句的引导词都没有异议的。

地点状语从句只能用where/ wherever引导， in which引导的只能是定语从句。
从句性质都不一样了， 还怎么替换呢？
定语从句可以替换： He went to the factory where / in which his father works.
地点状语从句，无法替换 Go where you are needed. 去需要你的地方。
这个句子= go to the place where/ in which you are needed.
先改成定语从句，然后再替换
