when it is offered,students may choose to register for oral communication instead of reading/writing;
however,Oral Communication does not substitute for the reading/writing requirement for earning
an ELI certificate of proficiency or completion. Students who earn passing grades in oral communicationg
I or II are eligible to take the speaking/listening(SL) poction of the ELI placement exam at the
beginning of the following session in order to determine whether they may skip a level of SL. Finally

Program dates
The ELI's Intensive english program holds six sessions of study each year,with fall and spring sessions
lasting 8 weeks and summer sessions lasting 6 weeks.

fall 1,2007: August 20-October 12
fall 2,2007: October 18-December 14
spring 1,2008: January 7-February 29
spring 2,2008: March 4-May 2
summer 1,2008: May 12-June 23

The ELI can accept up to 20 students from OUC each session. OUC students should arrive at the birmingham,
Alabama airport either one or two days prior to the beginning of the session in which they will
enroll. Representatives from the ELI will meet the students at the birmingham airport and transport
them to the UA campus in the city of Tuscaloosa,a one-hour drive from Birmingham.Group transportation
back to the Birmingham airport at the end of their period of study will also be provided on the
departure date, which would normally be the day after the session ends. Costs for airport transportation
are included for groups of five or more students who arrive and depart together.
Program Costs
Individual students costs for this program of study include standard ELI charges related to tuition
and fees,medical insurance,housing meals,and textbooks.Detailed costs for OUC students during the
2007/08 academic year are as follows:

Tuition is ste at 80% of full tuitiong based on projected enrollments of 75 students per year.
The housing cost provided is for apartment-style living.Dormitory-style housing may be available at
a lower cost of $940 for the full session. OUC may request the preferred room style for its students,
but all requests are controlled by the office of Residential Life and are subject to availability.
The charge for medical insurance can be deducted should OUC wish to provide its own coverage.
Proof of adequate insurance is required.
