Ss: Oh! But in all my garden there is no red rose! What should I do? I really love her! (这番话给在橡树上的夜莺听见了,她从绿叶丛中探出头来,四处张望着。)
N (said to everyone): Here at last is a true lover! Although I don't know him, but I'll every night singing for him.
The butterfly: but it is winter now.
The daisy: there is no flower in garden.
The little lizard: what should he do?
Ss (said to himself): I have no red roses, so tomorrow night I shall sit lonely, she will pass me by. And my heart will break. (The young student was crying)
A little Green Lizard: Why is he weeping?
A Butterfly: Why, indeed? A Daisy: Why, indeed?
N (told them): He is weeping(哭泣) for a red rose.
The little Green Lizard, the Butterfly and the Daisy (cried): For a red rose? (Then they all laughed)
The little Lizard: It's ridiculous! Just for a rose?
N:(摇了摇头) Love is mysterious (Curtains fall)

Chapter 2 (In the centre of the grass-plot(草地) was standing a beautiful Rose-tree, and when she saw it she flew over to it, and lit upon a spray在一块草地的中央长着一棵美丽的玫瑰树,她看见那棵树后就朝它飞过去,落在一根小枝上。)
N (cried): Give me a red rose, and I will sing you my sweetest song.
The white Tree (shook its head): My roses are white, as white as snow, but go to my brother tree, and perhaps he will give you what you want. (The Nightingale flew over to the Rose-tree.飞去玫瑰树)
N: Give me a red rose, and I will sing you my sweetest song
The yellow Tree (shook its head): My roses are yellow, as yellow as gold. But go to my brother, he grows under the Student's window, and perhaps he will give you what you want.
(The Nightingale flew over to the Rose-tree飞去玫瑰树)
N: Give me a red rose, and I will sing you my sweetest song.
The Tree3 (shook its head): My roses are red, as red as apple, but the winter has chilled my veins(冻坏我的血管), and the frost(霜) has nipped my buds(摧毁我的花蕾), and the storm has broken my branches(枝干), and I shall have no roses at all this year.
N: One red rose is all I want, only one red rose! Is there no way to solve?
The tree: There is a way, but it is so terrible, I can't tell you.
N: Tell it to me, I am not afraid.
The tree3: If you want a red rose, you must singing at moonlight, and stain(染) it with your heart's-blood. At the same time ,you must sing to me with your breast against a thorn(胸膛顶住一根刺). All night long you must sing to me, and the thorn must pierce(刺穿) your heart, and your life-blood must flow into my body, and become my blood.
The nightingale: Well, I should think about it. (Curtains fall)

Chapter 3 (the nightingale comes in)
N: With dead for a red rose is a great price. But I really want to get it for the young man, and Life is very valuable to all. Yet Love is better than Life, and what is the heart of a bird compared to the heart of a man (So she spread her brown wings for flight, and soared into the air. She swept over the garden like a shadow, and like a shadow she sailed through the grove.) (Curtains fall)

Chapter 4 (The young Student was still lying on the grass, where she had left him, and the tears were not yet dry in his beautiful eyes.)
N: Be happy, be happy; you shall have your red rose All I ask you in return is that you will be a true lover.
The Oak-tree (whispered): Sing me one last song, I shall feel very lonely when you are gone.
Ss: the song is very good, but doses she gets feeling? I don’t know. and everybody knows that the arts are selfish.
(And when the Moon shone in the heavens the Nightingale flew to the Rose-tree, and set her breast against the thorn. All night long she sang with her breast against the thorn, and the cold crystal Moon leaned down(俯下身)and listened. All night long she sang, and the thorn went deeper and deeper into her breast, and her life-blood ebbed away from her.)
The tree 3(cried): Press closer, little Nightingale, or the Day will come before the rose is finished. (So the Nightingale pressed closer against the thorn, and louder and louder grew her song, for she sang of the birth of passion in the soul of a man and a maid(因为她歌唱着一对成年男女心中诞生的激情).)
The tree 3: Press closer, little Nightingale, or the Day will come before the rose is finished. (So the Nightingale pressed closer against the thorn, and the thorn touched her heart, and a fierce pang of pain shot through her. Bitter, bitter was the pain, and wilder and wilder grew her song, for she sang of the Love that is perfected by Death, of the Love that dies not in the tomb. (Then she gave one last burst of music. The white Moon heard it, and she forgot the dawn, and lingered on in the sky. The red rose heard it, and it trembled (颤抖)all over with ecstasy(狂喜), and opened its petals to the cold morning air. Echo(回声) bore it to her purple caverns (紫色洞穴)in the hills, and woke the sleeping shepherds (牧童)from their dreams. It floated through the reeds(芦苇) of the river, and they carried its message to the sea.)
The tree(cried): Look, look! the rose is finished now (but the Nightingale made no answer, for she was lying dead in the long grass, with the thorn in her heart. And at noon the Student opened his window and looked out.)
Ss: Why, what a wonderful piece of luck! Here is a red rose! I have never seen any rose like it in all my life. It is so beautiful that I am sure it has a long Latin name (Then he put on his hat, and ran up to the Professor's house with the rose in his hand.)

Chapter 5 (The daughter of the Professor was sitting in the doorway (门口)winding blue silk on a reel(在纺车上纺着蓝色的丝线), and her little dog was lying at her feet.)
Ss: You said that you would dance with me if I brought you a red rose. Here is the reddest rose in all the world. You will wear it to-night next your heart, and as we dance together it will tell you how I love you.
G(frowned): I am afraid it will not go with my dress, and, besides, the Chamberlain’s nephew has sent me some real jewels, and everybody knows that jewels cost far more than flowers.
Ss(said angrily): Well, upon my word, you are very ungrateful (He threw the rose into the street, where it fell into the gutter, and a cart-wheel went over it.)
The girl: Ungrateful! I tell you what, you are very rude; and, after all, who are you? Only a Student. Why, I don’t believe you have even got silver buckles to your shoes as the Chamberlain’s nephew has . (she got up from her chair and went into the house.)
Ss: What I a silly thing Love is! "It is not half as useful as Logic(逻辑), for it does not prove anything, and it is always telling one of things that are not going to happen, and making one believe things that are not true. In fact, it is quite unpractical, and, as in this age to be practical is everything, I shall go back to Philosophy and study Metaphysics(形而上学). (So he returned to his room and pulled out a great dusty book, and began to read.)
