whether后面的 or not可以省略吗？

whether后面的 or not可以省略吗？ 我知道whether or not连用时是不能省略的，那么wether...or not这种句式可以省略 or not吗？

另外还有一个问题，到底可不可以说if.....or not? 如果可以，if...or not后面的 or not可以省略吗？我知道 if or not连在一起肯定是不能的。
最好有字典等出处注解，给高分，谢谢。

您好，whether ... or not 这种句式后面的 or not 是否可以省略需要看语义而定，比如：

1）I don't know whether it will rain or not.
这里的 or not 是可以省略的，也就是 whether 引导的是（宾语从句）时，whether 的意思是【是否】。

2）I will go out whether it rains or not. / I will go out whether or not it rains.
这里的 or not 是不可以省略的，也就是 whether 引导的是（让步状语从句）时，whether 的意思是【不论……，无论如何……】的意思，也就是（不论下雨，或是不下雨，我都要出去。），而不是（定语从句）的（是否下雨）。

至于 if ... or not 这个用法，在语法上的确是没有问题的，当 if 为（是否）时，而且在英语文献中的确有这样的用法。比如：

1）I don't care if you come or not.
出自于（Understanding Grammar, New York, 1954, p:237）

2）She asked me if I was going to the store (or not).
出自于（Grammar for Use, p.138）

而在实际口语用法中，也常被使用：
1）I don't care if (whether) your car breaks down or not.
（我不在乎你的车是否坏了。）

2）It's still uncertain if (whether) he's coming or not.
（目前还不确定他是否会来。）

查看了很多的语法书，几乎都是（通常用 whether ... or not；不用 if ... or not）而不是（只可用 whether ... or not；不可用 if ... of not）的语句；但在其他用法上，比如（介词）后面，显示（只能用 whether，不用 if），就非常的绝对了。所以，应该是现在大多数人接受 whether ... or not 的用法，而不是 if ... or not 的用法。不过个人认为在（口语中）使用 if ... or not 在欧美国家是常见的，但在现在文学文献中的确较少见到，所以可能（口语）可以使用，但在（正式文件）较少用到了，毕竟语言是随着习惯的改变而改变，是相对的。

在牛津大辞典里面，标明（whether ... or）的用法要比（if ... or）更正式，更适用于书面英语，但没有否定 if ... or (not) 的用法。）

在大英百科全书的例句中，有 I wonder if it's true (or not). 的用法。

朗文词典也有 if ... or not 的例句：I'm not sure if this is the right road or not.

所以 if ... or not 的用法的确存在，但假如细看这些例句，几乎都是（口语）会用到的句型。所以 if ... or not 口语是没有问题的，但书面语，或是较为正式的场合可能更倾向于使用 whether ... or not 的用法。
