Look into the National Character of Japan based on the Perspective of Shinto

Abstract:The best way to understand national character is to start from their culture. Japan's Shinto grew out of primitive belief. In the development processing, Shinto absorbed Buddhict Theory, Confucianism and many other cultures. Finally it became the unique Shinto. It is important to probe into Japan's national character from Shinto. Because during the development of Shinto, the deep influence to the daily life of Japanese cannot be ignored, especially the significant meaning to the form of its national character. The history of Shinto's developing process is the history of how Japanese being good at studying the mainland culture. From the aspect of Shinto's primitive belief and sacrifice activity, we can find a new way to study the reason why Japan has powerful collectivism and national cohesion. Moreover, we could take a close look on why the Japanese Value are lack of ability to distinguish between good and evil. Still Shinto will be the most important ideological basis for this nation to stand in the world.

Hence it’s necessary to discuss Japanese national character from the angle of Shintoism. Shintoism itself is a history of Japanese people’s high ability of learning and localization. We can explore the reason of formation of Japanese collectivism and national cohesion from the original belief and sacrifice ceremony of Shintoism. We can also study Japanese people’s view of value, which lacks the tendency to differentiate good and bad, from discussing the practicality of ancient and modern Shintoism.
