植入式广告（Product Placement），也称作为植入式营销（Product Placement Marketing），从所引进的这个概念本身的英文单词Product Placement来看，包括两个方面的内容，一是Product，译作“产品”，在市场营销学上，Product包括企业所提供的实体的有形产品，也包括像服务这类的无形产品，概念比较宽泛，可以认为是企业所能提供的用以交易的有形的和无形的产品总称。二是Placement，译作“置入”，也作“植入”或“放置”。Product Placement的意义就是说将产品的信息植入到一定的目标中去，而这个目标并没有特指。
所以，Product Placement这个词，如果单纯地称为植入式营销，或者植入式广告，都有些局限了这个概念本身的意义。因此，再增加一个单词Information，变成“PIP”（Product Information Placement），则更能用以概括这种新的营销传播方式的内涵和张力。说到底，PIP是一种新的营销传播思维方式，尤其是对网络营销而言。
