《泰坦尼克号》导演詹姆斯·卡梅隆邀请詹姆斯·霍纳为《泰坦尼克号》的原声带专辑作曲，两人早于1986年于《异形2》中合作过，但从那次合作后二人的关系恶化。后来，詹姆斯·卡梅隆很欣赏詹姆斯·霍纳在《勇敢的心》中的作曲工作，而詹姆斯·霍纳也觉得《泰坦尼克号》这部电影很有商业潜力，这使得两人再度合作。
由于詹姆斯·卡梅隆不允许电影出现任何的歌曲，詹姆斯·霍纳和韦尔·杰宁斯只能秘密的创作了这首歌曲，并邀请席琳·迪翁录唱。
