If the present rate of deforestation is allowed to continue， the consequences forthe earth will be great. We shall see a massive upsetting of ecosystems， very largeincreases in soil erosion, increases in flooding and in drought，changes in rainfallpatterns and regional, quite possibly global, changes in climate. We shall also probablylose many rare plant and animal species.

The governments in these countries are usually also too weak to stop largecompanies and powerful individuals from destroying the rainforests. They have no money,so when the poor whom they cannot feed find work cutting down trees or burning forest land,the governments often have no choice but to turn a blind eye. Moreover，for many ofthese countries，the valuable timber and other resources found in the rainforests arealso a very important source of foreign exchange, which they badly need to pay off theirforeign debts and purchase foreign equipment and other goods.

Today, China's economy has made the great achievement. More and more foreign people come to China to seek for cooperation. It is true that people's life standard has been improved a lot during the last decades, but the environment has been polluted badly. When I was very small, I could see the green trees and clean water around my hometown, but now, the river becomes smaller and the rubbish can be seen everywhere. I feel so sad about it. We have sacrificed so much to chase the profit. If we can't save the environment, we won't live the comfortable life. For us, we should not throw away the rubbish and plant more trees. The little things we do will make a great difference.

Now in some places of our country, a number of people have been cutting down the trees in the forests because they need wood and more farmland. The areas of forests are getting smaller and smaller. Some scientists say that there will be no vast forests in 20 or 30 years. It is really a terrible thing. Where the forests disappear, dust storms will occur occasionally. The weather will get hot and dry. The whole earth will become a big desert. A lot of plants and animals will disappear.Crops will not grow anywhere. Life will be difficult for everyone. The human beings will be punished for their forest-destroying activities.
